How Sensodyne® Toothpaste Helps Manage Sensitivity

Woman Smiling with Strong and White Teeth

All Sensodyne toothpastes are designed to relieve and protect against sensitivity* while also offering the benefits of a regular toothpaste—such as cavity protection and fresh breath. Here’s how Sensodyne works to help you manage your sensitivity so you can enjoy the things you love.

Once you have tooth sensitivity, it cannot be reversed. However, it can be managed at home with a proper oral care routine and a specialized toothpaste.

How It Works

Illustration of Potassium Nitrate and Stannous Fluoride

Each Sensodyne toothpaste uses one of the two main ingredients to treat sensitivity: potassium nitrate and stannous fluoride. Potassium nitrate works to numb sensitivity pain by soothing the nerves in your teeth. Stannous fluoride blocks triggers from reaching the nerves entirely by forming a protective barrier over teeth. Both methods are effective ways to treat sensitivity, and Sensodyne features a range of toothpastes using each ingredient.

How to Maintain Relief

The key to treating your tooth sensitivity with Sensodyne is to use it properly. Like your regular toothpaste, you should use Sensodyne twice a day, every day. Although sensitivity is treatable, it is not curable, and therefore requires ongoing management. It may take up to 2 weeks to feel the full effects of Sensodyne, and continuing to use it as your daily toothpaste will help you feel relief both now and in the future.
